Very photogenic storms.

Madagascar isn't really built to easily cope with landfalling Cat 3s.

Ivan: LARGE image. NRL.

I visited Madagascar in 2005. The more outlying areas still hadn't finished rebuilding from 2003.

It's one of the 10-poorest countries in the world (according to the UN). Lots of deforestation hurts flood-relief/control efforts.

I just got an update from some missionaries I know over there, and the death toll is now at 44, and there is flooding in the capital (Antananarivo).

At least Ivan didn't turn around after reaching Mozambique Channel, which some of the storms have in years past.
