Black bars on GOES IR images...
      #83019 - Tue Aug 26 2008 03:10 PM

why is this so? in a animated loop there are tons of black bars. it makes it very difficult to determine directions of storms and such.

It could be a problem with your Java version or your graphics card. Normally there are no black bars.

hi craig, thanks for your response. im not sure why a graphics card would have anything to do with reading source jpgs from NOAA, but i updated my drivers anywho and are still getting it. and latest java as well. although lately only 1 or 2 frames have has that problem rather than most.

Is it happening in all loops, or just one specific loop? Horizontal or vertical bars?

hey michael, its going horizontal. its like the entire image isnt downloaded. and i thought maybe i just downloaded a bad part of the loop. but when i check their source its on the source files as well. i thought maybe it was something wrong with their setup. 99% of the loops today are fine but this happens a lot.

I suspect that the problem is at the source/origin and not on your end. I have few problems with the images and loops from this source:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/satellite.shtml

Edit: I get the same results as you at weather.msfc.nasa.gov.

ok good its not me, thanks michael appreciate the investigative work. the only thing i can think of is poor reception?

(A reminder to use the PM capability for messages to a particular individual. It was a reception problem - probably at the earth groundstation at Wallops Island, Virginia (although I'm not sure if that was the 'problem' site). Sometimes a spike in solar activity can interfere with the satellite signal.)

Totally out of my element reading this but I have a question:

I am supposed to get on a plane Sat. Aug. 30 at 6am for a family vacation in Panama City Beach, in your opinions, should I cancel, or just wing it. I will have to small children 4 and 1...and some in-laws.

Post moved to proper Forum.

I wouldn't cancel your trip. Enjoy the beach on Sunday and continue to monitor the progress of Gustav. Monday will be the day to make the decision to stay or move to a safer location.
