More woes for Philippines as Typhoon Utor strengthens rapidly
      #74217 - Sat Dec 09 2006 07:42 PM

Typhoon Utor has been intensifying rapidly over the central Philippines today, taking advantage of a track that has kept the storm mostly over water. Current wind speed on the last JTWC advisory is just 75 kts, but since then the eye has become clearly visible and T numbers have climbed to 6.0/6.0, which usually corresponds to about 115 kts. The storm is passing over or very near the southern tip of Mindoro Island and should pass close to Busuanga Island on its way into the South China Sea. It is expected to reach 100 kts. in the South China Sea, but my guess is that it's already there.

Edit: Now 100 kts, expected to peak in 36 hrs. as a 140 kt. supertyphoon.
