At 2 am EDT...0600z...the large eye of Hurricane Jeanne was located near latitude 26.5 north...longitude 75.6 west or about 100 miles...160 km...east of Great Abaco Island in the northwestern Bahamas. This is also about 270 miles...435 km...east of the Southeast Florida coast.
Jeanne is now moving toward the west near 14 mph...23 km/hr...and this general motion is expected to continue during the next 12 to 24 hours. On this track...the core of Jeanne will be moving across the northwestern Bahamas later today.
Reports from an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft indicate maximum sustained winds are now near 105 mph...170 km/hr...with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours...and Jeanne could become a major hurricane later today.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 70 miles...110 km... from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 205 miles...335 km...mainly to the northeast of the center.
The latest minimum central pressure reported by the hurricane hunter is 962 mb...28.41 inches.
