QBO and it's effects...

Reading more on this topic I find parts of it confusing. For example the diagrams are vertical cross sections, but they have circular bubbles of varying colors of red, and orange. Could someone explain what those bubbles signify or how they're read? Also I know that a positive (westerly phase) of the QBO increases the likelyhood of an active tropical season, but why?
