An "invest" is an area that is being watched for possible tropical/subtropical development. The numbers go from 90-99 then over again...the L is for Atlantic, E for East Pacfic, W for the West Pacfic... and so forth. If you see an 88 or 89 (892006)...that is just a test run. Hope that helps.

...and the derivation is from the word 'Investigate'.
