I don't see how not participating in this "boycott" means that Americans won't come together on something.

Symbolic? Not really. It's symbolic of a group of people that lacks the foresight to realize that it's a meaningless boycott. If you want the nation to "come together" on something, make it actually have an effect. Don't use ill-conceived logic to claim that it will have an effect when in reality it has none.

(I'm not directing this at you, ftlaudbob, I'm directing it at the people who thought up such an event.)
