cieldumort has touched on the primary reason, i.e., Fay was intensifying just before landfall and continued this process after landfall, but one other factor also must be considered. When the water table in the Everglades is high - and warm - storms can maintain intensity while going across the southern half of the Florida peninsula. A good recent example of this is Hurricane Irene in 1999. ED
