Using Clear hurricane panels? Beware!

I would like to post about a common misconception about install clear hurricane panels. In cases where a homeowner is using an H-Header at the top of a doorway or window, you need to be very careful about installing clear hurricane panels. Remember, in an H-Header, the hurricane panels slide up into the track only and they are NOT bolted down. They are sitting loose up in the H-Header. Panels are only secured at the bottom of the door or window via wingnuts, etc. That being said, clear hurricane panels are made of plastic and can bend right out of that H-Header if there are heavy enough winds!

If homeowners insist on using clear panels, they really should be used alongside aluminum or steel panels. So if a window, say, has 5 hurricane panels over it, use 4 steel/aluminum panels and only 1 clear panel.

The solution to secure the clear panels so they don't come loose is to drill holes along the sides of both the clear panel and the adjacent steel/aluminum panels (every 12 inches) and then attach them together with a bolt. This will properly secure the clear panel to the adjacent steel/aluminum panel and still allow light into your home.
